Improving Patient Access to Critical Care at SJH: A Quality Improvement Initiative
O'Hagan, Zieta; Pacturanan, Michelle; Francis, Jamila
The Irish National Intensive Care Unit Audit (INICUA) measures the quality of care in
each ICU benchmarking against established international standards. The HSE
introduced a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) in 2018 (Fig. 1) auditing access times
to critical care beds. Timely admission to ICU improves survival and outcomes for
critically ill patients. Delays have been shown to worsen outcomes; mortality, ICU
length of stay (LOS) and hospital LOS (Harris et al 2018). This QI project aims to
demonstrate the journey that St James’s Hospital has undergone to ensure
achievement of this KPI.
