“Rheumatology service - NGH; impactfully attacking the waiting list without compromising access to existing patients” Kenny, R. T.; Slevin, F.; O'Rourke, J.; Massey, K.; Hughes, C. Rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) are a group of approximately 200 conditions treated by both the rheumatology service and in primary care affecting 1 in 4 people in Ireland (National Clinical Programme for Rheumatology 2018). With a growing, aging population, the rheumatology waiting list continues to receive a steady flow of outpatient referrals. Since the inception of the service in 2014, it has been a growing challenge to provide timely access for newly referred patients whilst continuing to provide multidisciplinary support to the existing rheumatology cohort. Unfortunately, in recent years the routine waiting list reached 70 months. With impactful strategies; this has been successfully reduced to 5 months during 2024.
