The Musculoskeletal (MSK) Triage service
has been proven to be effective in reducing
the waiting times for Orthopaedic and
Rheumatology assessment on a national
level. MSK Triage regularly refer to pain
services, however due to the long waiting
times for this service patients are
frequently required to wait for extensive
periods to receive pain relieving procedures
and be assessed by a consultant in pain
management.
The International Association for the Study
of Pain Task Force on Wait-Times (2011)
recommends that no patient should wait
longer than eight weeks to be seen. The
current wait times for MSK Triage is five to
six months, which exceeds the KPI of three
months set by The National MSK Steering
Group (2022).
